COURSE DESCRIPTION:
ARTS 102 Visual Arts and Culture (3). This is an introductory course in visual language and literacy. The course will include a brief history and overview of art and design and will also examine cultural, political, and social aspects of art.
COURSE TEXT:
Frank, Patrick (2011). Prebles’ Artforms: An Introduction to the Visual Arts, 10th Edition, New Jersey: Pearson Prentice Hall. (Recommended, not req.)
COURSE STRUCTURE:
Classroom experiences will be based on assignments from lectures, readings, and projects. Students should give particular attention to terms, concepts and imagery introduced in classroom lectures. From these, written assignments, tests, and/or other assignments will be derived.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Students will:
- comprehend the function of art and design and the role of artists in society.
- learn appropriate art vocabulary to identify styles, media, and techniques.
- compare and contrast artistic styles and/or use of media from different historical periods and cultures.

(KNOWLEDGE OF CREATIVE EXPRESSION):
Students will:
- demonstrate an understanding of historical movements and professional practices as they relate to creative projects.
- understand and apply formal principles to creative production and aesthetic evaluation.
- gain experience in the formation and implementation of the processes of creative production, including idea development, creative expression, and responsive action.
GRADING POLICY:
A. All work is due on the date and time specified. Students will receive one grade letter reduction per class meeting for work that is handed in beyond the due date. Assignments/projects turned in one week or more beyond the due date will automatically receive a grade of F.
B. Final grades are calculated using the following scale:
90 - 100 = A
88 - 89 = B+ 80 - 87 = B 78 - 79 = C+ |
70 - 77 = C
68 - 69 = D+ 60 - 67 = D Less than 60 = F |
C. Tests, projects and assignments share equal grade values.
CLASS ATTENDANCE:
Visual Arts Department absence policy:
MWF classes -- students are allowed up to 4 unexcused absences without penalty. Absences 5 & 6 are punishable by grade reduction and absence 7 will result in failure of the course.
TTH classes -- students are allowed up to 3 unexcused absences without penalty. Absences 4 & 5 are punishable by grade reduction and absence 6 will result in failure of the course.
Make-up of a test or an activity will be done by arrangement of the Instructor and the student.

a.) incapacitating illness,
b.) official representation of the University (excuses for official representation of the University should be obtained from the official supervising the activity),
c.) death of a close relative,
